Word 2007 Plugin Stopped Working After Zotero Standalone Update

I am running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with Microsoft Office 2007 (12.0.4518.1014) installed under wine 1.6.2. I have used the Firefox connector with the Zotero Word plugin for years with no issues. I was previously storing my Zotero library on Dropbox, but learned that this has great potential for data corruption, so I relocated my library to my local drive at /home/kap335/.wine/drive_c/users/kap335/Zotero . I also recently updated my Zotero Standalone to Version 5.0.77 because it refused to open unless I updated it.

I can see both the "Zotero" and "Add-Ins" tabs when I open Microsoft Word, but clicking on any of the buttons yields the following error message: "Zotero experienced an error updating your document. Would you like to view troubleshooting instructions?" When I click "ok", nothing happens. This error message occurs whether I try to edit an existing document or a blank document. I have reinstalled the Word Plugin several times via Zotero Standalone with Word closed. I have tried using the suggested Zotero.dot and Zotero.dotm files in my STARTUP directory, but that does not seem to have an effect. My macros are disabled with notification under the MS Word Options Trust Centre.

I am reasonably proficient working with Linux systems, but I am nowhere near qualified as a systems administrator. Installing Microsoft Office under wine was a huge headache and I would like to avoid reinstalling it if possible. I am open to uninstalling and reinstalling Zotero Standalone and any relevant Firefox Add-Ins, but would require guidance in doing so. It is worth mentioning that I have two Zotero installations. The installation I am currently using and discussing here is under wine, but I also have a version under linux (I don't recall how this was installed). I have always had both versions and in the past, using the Standalone version under wine with the MS Office plugin worked with no issues.

I opened Zotero Standalone, enabled debugging, and clicked each button on the "Zotero" and "Add-Ins" tabs. The resulting debugging ID is D1971100599. I also submitted a report for my Zotero Connector (Firefox Version 52.9.0, cannot be updated), though I do not believe that is the source of the issue. I am still able to save citations to Zotero from Firefox and they pop up immediately in Zotero Standalone. The Zotero Connector Report ID is: 2107099479 . Any assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated. I am happy to provide any additional information that may be required. Thanks!
  • UPDATE: I downgraded my Zotero Standalone to Version 5.0.58, modified the Zotero.dotm file to refer to the Zotero Standalone exe instead of the Firefox exe, removed the Zotero.dot file from my STARTUP folder, placed the Zotero.dotm file in my STARTUP folder, restarted Microsoft Word and the Add-Ins tab is gone, but the Zotero tab remains and the buttons are functional. I have tested this functionality by adding citations to a new document, as well as editing citations and adding a bibliography to a document with existing citation fields. I am not sure why the latest version of Zotero seems to have broken the plugin, but it is working with the old version and that is good enough for me!
  • We stopped supporting Word 2007 in February 2018. We currently support Word 2010 or later.

Needless to say, we don't recommend running outdated versions of Zotero — there've been countless bug fixes, improvements, and new features in the year and a half since 5.0.58 — and we're only able to provide support here for the current version.
  • Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, Office 2007 is the only version that installed properly on my machine. I do have Office 2010 installed on my Ubuntu 18.04 machine, but have not tried installing Zotero there yet as I do most of my academic writing from my Ubuntu 16.04 machine. I understand that my system configuration is outdated, but updating is not a straightforward process so I am content using the old version with no support for the time being. If I run into issues in the future, I will try to use my Ubuntu 18.04 machine with Office 2010 instead and seek support from there. Thank you!
