Citations showing up as "citation" highlighted in gray

Citations showing up as "citation" highlighted in gray in Word for my in text citations. What am I doing wrong? why does it not put author, year like it is supposed to?

    "{Citation}", if that's what you mean, is just a temporary placeholder that shows up while the citation dialog is open. That would happen if you haven't actually made a selection from the citation dialog and the citation dialog is just hidden behind Word.

    If you think you're seeing something else, let us know the exact steps you're taking, step by step, to reproduce this after restarting Zotero and Word.
