Citekey format when using API

I'm using the API to pull down a Zotero library (~400 items), but on doing so, I end up with duplicated citekeys where author, short title and year are identical for 2+ entries. What's the best way to resolve this, other than manually?

Ideally this would be possible via the API query, but if not, I'd be looking for a command line program that will clean up this duplication, either by appending numbers (assuming I'm confident that there is no true duplication) or by including an additional entry field.

You can set a citation key for an item by adding it to the Extra field like this:
Citation key: Key

That will override the default generated key for the item.
