Auto update off results in error message when inserting citation

Report ID: 1600952192

My document keeps returning the following error message:
"Zotero experienced an error updating your document.
Would you like to view troubleshooting instructions?"

It is a shared Google Docs, and we are two people working on it.

Steps to reproduce:
1. I do not have Auto update on.
2. Add/Insert citation...
3. Without refreshing the document, add/insert another citation
4. It does not happen if refreshing in between inserting citations, as far as I can see
5. Also does not seem to happen when auto update is on

I have tried:
1. ALL of the troubleshooting instructions - and the error still orccurs when having deleted the ENTIRE document
2. Restarting Google Docs, Zotero and Computer

If we have the auto updates on, inserting a citation sometimes take VERY long time.

How can we avoid this when working, without receiving the error message everytime? It is very concerning when working in a long document to receive such an error message all the time...

Please help. Thanks :)
  • Can you reproduce this in a new document? If so, what are the steps precisely? Which browser and which citation style are you using?
  • Yes I can.

I am using Chrome and APA.

    The steps are:
    1. Turn off Auto updates
    2. Insert citation
    3. Do NOT refresh the document through the zotero button, i.e. the citation stays "grey"
    4. insert another citation
    = the error message appears.

    If:
    a) auto updates are on, or
    b) you refresh the document in between
= the error message does not appear
