MSWord on Mac: Paste renders fields/bookmarks as plain text

Using word processor plugins: Any time I copy or cut and paste text containing a citation, the citation gets rendered as plain text-- whether this is within the same document, or into a new document. I would like to retain the citation fields/bookmarks within and between MSWord documents (that are all saved as .docx files). This wasn't an issue about four years ago. I'm on a mid-2012 MacBook Pro, running version 16.33 of Microsoft Word for Mac, using Zotero version 5.0.82.

I've tried the following (per other threads on here):

-Cut and paste, instead of copy and paste
-Paste and match formatting
-Setting the document preferences of a new document before pasting
-Converting from Fields to Bookmarks

Basically, nothing works, and I'm writing a paper and my doctoral thesis so this is a major pain in the ass.

Help please!
  • That should just work -- do update to the most recent Zotero version (5.0.84) although this is unlikely to make a difference.

First question I'd have is how you ascertain that fields aren't copied -- Word has different settings for how fields are displayed and some users confuse the absence of grey shading with the absence of field codes. (Do stick to fields, which are much more reliable than bookmarks)
