Zotero, Word, and macOS Catalina

Report ID: 1146171918

Zotero worked great two weeks ago prior to my Catalina (10.15.3) and Word updates (16.34), at which point Zotero would only generate empty boxes instead of footnote. I updated Zotero to 5.0.84 and took it in but had no luck.

Did I miss this in another forum?
  • Can you take a screenshot of what you're seeing, upload it somewhere (e.g., Dropbox), and post a link here?
  • What citation style are you using? What happens if you change the font?

Are you by any chance using the Dragon voice recognition program? The only other report of this I can recall was from someone using that.
  • If I change the font, same thing happens sans question mark.

Citation style - I've not chosen it yet. I don't have a default citation method but simply choose it whenever I generate the first footnote by *control* + *option* + *A*

No idea what Dragon voice program is. Sorry.
  • If you're using the Zotero plugin, you had to have chosen a citation style. When you first use Add/Edit Citation in a new document, it shows a document preferences window where you choose the citation style.
  • Ok I'm not sure if I am using the plug in. Usually I just open Zotero on my toolbar and then generate it from cnlt+opt+A?
  • Default format is Chi 17th ed. author-date

You're not actually activating the plugin. In older versions of Word, Control-Option-A was a shortcut for Add/Edit Citation, but that's not something we're able to set in current versions, so it would only be set if you configured it yourself in the Word settings. Without that set — or if you set it previously and somehow lost the setting when you upgraded Word — Control-Option-A will just insert a character that can't be rendered. You'll get the exact same thing with Control-Option and most other letters.

Just click Add/Edit Citation in the Zotero ribbon section in the Word toolbar. If you want Control-Option-A to work, you'll need to configure that manually.
  • So I had missed the Zotero ribbon in Word. Thanks.

Working on Control-Option-A but having difficulty.
  • It appears the instructions are dated, when I go to Tools > Macro > Marcos... > the selections are not right/left but top/bottom. Screenshot attached.

  • The instructions don't say to go to Tools → Macro → Macros.
  • Tools > Marco [drop down arrow; I cannot select it, only hover over it] > [three options: (1) Macros... (2) Record Macros... (3) Visual Basic Editor...]
  • What instructions are you looking at? I linked to our instructions for configuring shortcuts above. Again, they say nothing about Tools → Macro.

  • Ah. My bad. It's been a very long day. It's all fixed, thanks very much for your time and patience.
