lltjournal.org

This site (https://www.lltjournal.org/) appears to be completely broken, in a number of different ways, when it comes to trying to save articles into Zotero -- either with the Zotero Connector or through the main Zotero application.

Taking the article by Levy (2007) as an example (https://www.lltjournal.org//item/2576), Zotero Connector strangely shows a PDF icon on the article page and offers to "Save to Zotero (PDF)" rather than saving as an article (or even as a Web Page, as sometimes happens with unsupported sites).

Clicking the PDF icon leads to a red "X" icon and the message "Saving failed. Is Zotero running?" Zotero is indeed running, and extracting articles from other sites work fine.

Interestingly, Zotero does not detect the DOI listed in two separate places on the article page. This leads to the second way that importing articles from this site to Zotero appears to be broken: If you copy and paste the DOI (https://dx.doi.org/10125/44106) into Zotero using "Add Item(s) by Identifier", it gives the following error:

"Zotero could not find any identifiers in your input. Please verify your input and try again."

The DOI appears to be valid though -- try visiting the URL in a browser and it leads here: https://scholarspace.manoa.hawaii.edu/handle/10125/44106

One final attempt to extract the article involves opening the PDF in a separate browser window (i.e.: https://scholarspace.manoa.hawaii.edu/bitstream/10125/44106/1/11_02_levy.pdf) and then clicking the "Save to Zotero (PDF)" button, which actually appears to work -- more or less. The PDF is at least imported into Zotero, and the Title, Author, and Abstract fields are populated correctly. However, all other metadata has to be filled in manually -- including the URL, publication date, volume, issue, and even journal title.

(Actually, the journal title is partially filled in -- as "Language Learning", rather than "Language Learning & Technology". Is there an unescaped string somewhere preventing the ampersand and everything that follows from being parsed correctly?)

Overall, the above issues make it extremely onerous and time-consuming to import articles from this journal into Zotero. Is there any other information I could provide to help resolve these issues? I'm running the latest version of Zotero (5.0.82 - just updated the other day). Also, the article above was just a representative example -- all articles from this journal have the same issues.
  • One thing is that "10125/44106" isn't actually a DOI. They just take advantage of the fact that doi.org also resolves handles for technical reasons. That means a) Zotero can't recognize it (all DOIs start with "10." and Zotero uses that property to identify them) and b) there's no metadata in CrossRef that could be added using add by identifier. (it is, btw., also bad practice, and arguably both unethical and potentially illegal for the journal to pretend this is a DOI)

And then there is virtually no metadata in a structure format on the page itself. It would be technically possible to write a scraper -- the metadata exists on the page -- but it'd be pretty tedious to write.

But why not just get this from Hawaii's scholarspace?
importing https://scholarspace.manoa.hawaii.edu/handle/10125/44106 to Zotero works great for me.
