Word could not communicate with Zotero

Currently have Zotero as an add-in however I keep getting the error message “word could not communicate with Zotero. Please ensure Zotero is running and try again.” I have followed all of the troubleshooting steps to no avail. Zotero currently shows as an inactive plug in within word.

What does that mean? If you're clicking it and getting this error, the plugin is active in Word.
