"If you continue, data associated with the '[e-mail]' account will be removed from this computer..."

Hi all,

I operate all Zotero accounts for my company.

An employee in my company has two valid employee e-mails. She has created all Zotero entries so far using "e-mail #1". She is required to change e-mails, and begin using "e-mail #2" for her Zotero group library entries/access henceforth.

I requested her via "e-mail #2" to join our company group libraries, so she can begin using Zotero with the correct new e-mail. She was able to accept these requests successfully.

However, when she attempted to switch accounts (ie. sync her "e-mail #2" account to her computer) she received the following notification:

"This Zotero database was last synced with a different account ("e-mail #1") from the current one ('e-mail #2). If you continue, data associated with the 'e-mail #1' account will be removed from this computer. Remove existing data? [yes]"
(If you click yes, then you can select "switch accounts")

My question is - what does this warning mean? It seems ambiguous to me.

If she switches accounts, will all of the literature she's collected and entered into the companies group library be lost?

Thank you in advance.

She should delete the second account and simply associate the new email address with the old account, or change the primary address, in the account settings.
My question is - what does this warning mean? It seems ambiguous to me.
In what way do you feel it's ambiguous? It says pretty precisely what will happen if you continue.

The ability to start syncing a local database created with one account with another account is planned, but it's technically complicated and error-prone, so it's currently not allowed.
  • Though to your question about group libraries the answer is no, it won't remove anything from any group. The deletion refers to the database on the local machine, not to anything on the Zotero server.
  • @dstillman Thank you for your help, I changed her e-mails and that solved the issue. Thanks!

It seemed ambiguous whether it meant that the data would be deleted only from her computer, or from all shared groups that she's added literature to. @adamsmith thank you for answering that.
