Upgrade StorageAPI access to new metadata retrieval service?

I note from the docs that PDF metadata retrieval now goes through a zotero-run web service that is separate from user accounts. Are there any plans to open up API access to this? The use case is (perhaps unsurprisingly) mobile: I've been looking into hacking around with the API to make it possible to smoothly add documents to my library from iOS...
