TEI headers?

I have just written to the TEI (Text encoding Initiative)consortium suggesting that they look at Zotero as a means of producing TEI headers and TEI headers into Zotero references, (TEI is a non-commercial academic innovation).

TEI is an outstanding XML markup dialect for scholarly works of all kinds. It suffers from a lack of front-end applications and its inherent complexity requires an entire rethink of Word Processor design before it will have the widespread use it deserves.

In other words this is not really a practical necessity, but as a potential. TEI headers are designed to contain bibliographic information in a very versatile yet consistent way, it is ideal for referencing, forgive me, but by way of contrast, the Dublin-core is not as well suited for this purpose.

I do not have the technical abilities to carry out this desire, hopefully the TEI consortium might become interested -- if they do, it would be good if people here had already thought about the possibilities.
  • Rather than worrying about Zotero per se, it might be better to look into converting in and out of formats Zotero understands; like MODS and/or BIBO RDF.
  • GregS,

You might also suggest to TEI that they approach the Center for History and New Media as a prospective member.
  • fbennet, I will keep that in mind, I am an outsider to TEI, just very interested in what they are doing. If they reply to me, I will certainly mention it.

bdarcus, I have thought about this, it is easy enough to get Zotero into TEI headers (well I would not be able to it elegantly but I could manage via a script language), the real problem is the other way round from TEI headers to Zotero, that needs someone really familiar with all the permutations possible in the header (there are a great many). If the TEI group became interested they have the expertise, but I suspect they would need help from here, hence my posting.

It may come to nothing for unless they get involved, or Zotero has someone who really has a handle on TEI it won't be a goer. TEI is very much a future thing, though there are many works being marked-up by it -- the fact is that using it at the moment is no small task.
