Indexing stored copies of files

I couldn't find anything on indexing stored copies of files ?

I was under the impression that stored copies of txt files would be indexed... and searchable on the search box.

Yes, plain text files are indexed. You need to be in Everything search mode in the main search bar or use the Attachment Content advanced search condition.
