GIF files when saving attachments

I am a newbie and just experimenting with Zotero. When I save a PDF file as an attachment, it seems to generate a folder name of random letters. Within that folder is a PDF file (as expected) and about 30 .gif and .png files. What are these for? Do I really need them? If not, is there a way to get rid of them?

Thanks.
  • By default Zotero saves snapshots for certain pages, i.e. a copy of the web-page from which you created an item. The small files are all parts of such a page. You can disable this behavior in the preferences by unchecking the option "Automatically take snapshots when creating items from web pages":
