You need to actually post the Debug ID here for us to look at it.
Typed command + 7 to generate a new reference.
What's Cmd-7? Is that a custom shortcut key you created? There shouldn't be anything custom here. If you're trying to insert a citation, we need to know that you're clicking the normal Add/Edit Citation button in the plugin toolbar.

In any case, this sounds like you either didn't close the citation bar previously — in which case you would just be bringing Zotero and the citation bar to the front, which the previous citation still showing — or the cursor is somehow still in the existing citation when you trigger it again.

Remember that you can toggle Word field codes to see exactly where existing citations are.

You can upload screenshots to Dropbox or similar and post links here.
  • Yes, it's a custom shortcut. But it also happens without the shortcut. And no, the cursor is definitely NOT in the previous place.

I'm not sure what you mean by "closing the citation bar".

I will post screenshots and post the debug ID later.

I'm not sure what you mean by "closing the citation bar".
If instead of properly pressing Enter you click outside of the bar, or you double-click on the results list (when you should only single-click) and end up clicking outside of it on the second click, you'll just bring Word to the front without actually closing the dialog and inserting a citation. So then if you press Add/Edit Citation again, it will just bring the already-open citation bar to the front with the previous citation still selected. (That would be equivalent to just switching back to Zotero and toggling between open windows to bring the citation bar — which never closed — to the front.)
  • Ah ok. I'm 99 percent certain that I've always pressed enter after inserting a citation, and that I've also done so when I began having this problem. But will double-check this as well.
  • Hi again. Sorry, didn't have time to look more into this yesterday. But the problem is still there. Just to be sure I have reinstalled zotero (standalone version for windows), the word plugin, and the connector for firefox. Here is what happens, this time with screenshots: I place the cursor in an existing citation. This citation was inserted by me 10 minutes ago. When I want to add further citations to that same citation, I place the cursor within the citation. I press the "add citation" button. But then the bar which comes up is empty.

Are there any possible solutions here? Could it be my library itself which is somehow damaged and is messing things up? I imported most of it from endnote, but the problem also shows up with citations that I imported directly into zotero.
  • And here is another problem. What I did now was to close and restart Zotero. I place the cursor in a new place, to insert a new citation. What happens now though is that the most recent citation - Maussen - is showing up even though the cursor is not placed within it.

  • I sent a debug output as well. Number: D371516914
  • This seems like a case of corrupt document. The debugging broken documents instructions will be the only option that will allow you to fix this properly and definitely.
