How to add metadata to unrecognized items?

I have added some items to Zotero that the application does not recognize. All Zotero offers me for these items is a note pane. How can I add date, author, etc. to these items so I may create citations?

How can I designate these items are documents or whatever and attach metadata to them?

One item is a legitimate scientific paper but apparently the pdf isn't formatted correctly for Zotero to pick up metadata. I've added the Pubmed entry to Zotero, how can I merge the two?

    Right-click → Create Parent Item

    Drag the PDF attachment onto the other item.
