Search results include many notes that do not fit search criteria

I must be missing something. When I search notes (advanced or quick search) for a string of text, the results include all the notes in a library. the ones that have the specified string are bolded, so I can scroll through and find them, but I cannot limit the results to notes that have the search string. Recently I was briefly getting search results containing only notes that had the searched string, but I don't know why, and now it's reverted to giving all notes, with the ones with the search string in boldface.
Any help in limiting the search results to notes that actually have the searched string would be much appreciated.

All search results always show all parent and sibling items of search hits for context. There's no way around that, I'm afraid.
