Zotero with google docs

Zotero plug ins are on google docs however, I am not able to cite using zotero in google docs.

What happens, exactly? Have you tried restarting Zotero?

So, when I click on add or edit citations in google docs, it takes me to zotero desktop but it doesn't show the search bar that comes up when I am trying to insert a reference for example in MS Word.

I restarted Zotero a few times. That did not help.

Look through all Zotero windows (either in the start bar, or by using Alt-Tab) after pressing Add/edit citation in Google Docs. The citation dialog might not come up to the top the first time you try to interact with google docs.
