Modifying in-text citations to (Author, Date)

Hello.

I am working on a document in Microsoft Word using Zotero.
I have found that throughout my document there are cases where the first initial of the author is being used - or in some cases, their whole first name and middle initial. I have made sure my Zotero library authors are all identical down to the spacing and periods beside their names. From other responses I see that I can change my CSL file by taking out the "disambiguate-add-givenname". However I have tried this several times after refreshing my document and the changes have not been incorporated into my paper.

I would just like my references to read (Author, Date) no first initials or full name. If there happens to be two different references by the same person, in the same year I would like to use the a,b style.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you try to switch citation style then to go back to the initial one?

  • Thank you for your prompt reply! I just attempted that a few times but no luck yet.
Here is an example of a few sentences from my paper. The 'Scott White' reference is the one I am interested in. The author section in Zotero is input as (White, Scott N) eg. (Last, First) for each citation.

Since then, additional annual weed problems have been documented (Scott N White & Webb, 2017), and the potential importance of seedling recruitment in populations of problematic species, such as red sorrel and hair fescue have been indicated (S. N. White, 2018; Scott N White, Boyd, Van Acker, & Swanton, 2015). As lowbush blueberry fields are not tilled between seasons, seeds released by weeds remain close to the soil surface similar to that reported in other no-till cropping systems (S. White, 2018).

If you need any additional information from my CSL code or anything of that sort, please let me know.
  • Those are definitely not the same first name in the data. Might be that the connection between Zotero database and citation has been lost (e.g. because you deleted duplicates?) and Zotero is relying on data stored in the document. Easiest would be to remove and re-insert the citations.
