Error storing PDF information through a web browser

When I store information for a PDF document through the web browser, there is no information as a title and author. When I open the document through a pdf reader I see that there is such information in the document.
  • You mean the PDF has title and author in the file properties? Zotero doesn't look there -- in general, that information is too often useless/incorrect.

Do you have an example (URL) of a PDF where Zotero doesnt' import any metadata?
  • Thanks for the reply!

I am a new user and I am still learning how Zotero works!

Every PDF open in the browser, the result is the same.

    Example 1
    1. I click on My Library in the Windows application
    2. I open a PDF document in the browser and press to keep the information in the Zotero.
    3. In Zotero application: Item Type is "Link to file". The file is automatically recorded on the disc. The information is saved - the title box indicates the file name (this is good!).

    Example 2
    1. I click on a group in the Windows application
    2. I open a PDF document in the browser and press to keep the information in the Zotero.
    3. In Zotero application: Item Type is "Web page". The file is not recorded on the disc (this is good!). The information is not saved - title box is empty (this is not good!).

  • I'm not really following this — links to screenshots might help — but my best guess of what you're describing is that you're saving PDFs directly (instead of saving article pages, which is the recommended way to save when possible) but you're saving them to a group that doesn't have file storage enabled. When you do that, Zotero can only save a generic webpage item, and since it didn't save the PDF itself, it can't retrieve metadata for it and create a parent item.

So the solutions are 1) save article pages instead when possible and 2) enable file editing for the group and sync.
  • Ok, I understand, thanks for the answer!
