Error : Suppress Author on «cases»

Hi everyone!

I am French speaker (sorry for my grammar errors).

I've just updated my Zotero from the version 5.0.65 to the version 5.0.66, but something got wrong.

The option «Suppress Author» doesn't work anymore in all my «cases» reference in my WORD document. (A «case» is a judicial decision.)

With the new version 5.0.66, the name of the case is still visible in my WORD document, even if I've clicked the «suppress author» box in the Zotero Connector Window (view classic).

For instance, before the update 5.0.66, I can write a case reference like this: R. v. Magill (Y. Terr. Ct.), préc., note 295, par. 16. But with the version 5.0.66, the reference appears now like this in my WORD document: R. v. Magill (Y. Terr. Ct.), R. v. Magill, préc., note 295, par. 16. Like you can see, the case name in my reference is now, wrongly, repeated.

My style of reference writing in Zotero is «Guide des références pour la rédaction juridique 7e édition (Guide Lluelles, French - Canada)».

Could you help me with my «suppress author» error ?
Or, do you think it's a good idea to uninstall my Zotero and try to download and reinstall the former version of Zotero, the version 5.0.65 ?

Thank you very much !

This would be due to a change I made in the citation processor. Thank you for noting the style, I will use that for testing, and restore the previous behavior.

(And you don't need to revert to a previous version of Zotero. This is a bug, and will be fixed in the next release. If you urgently need to get back to the previous behavior, a workaround plugin will be available in the next day or so.)

@mchenette: Should suppress-author also suppress title-short on subsequent citations, or should this be fixed only for full-form citations?
  • @fbennett Thanks for replying me so quickly. I note that the «Suppress author» doesn't work in a case reference, but it works correctly in an article reference. I think that this information can help you to fix the problem.
  • Yes - I haven't had a chance to work on the details yet, but I think the way to fix this will be to adjust the style. Should have more news in a couple of days, feel free to ping if you don't hear more by then.
  • @fbennett
I will answer for your question : "Should suppress-author also suppress title-short on subsequent citations, or should this be fixed only for full-form citations?"

I tried today, for a test, to put a case reference with a short title. The title-short work, but the suppress-author doesn't work.

For instance: Charkaoui c. Canada (Citoyenneté et Immigration), 2007 CSC 9 [Charkaoui], par. 2,

If I don't click the suppress-author box, this case reference appears like this in my text : Charkaoui, préc., note 1, par. 2.

And if I click the suppress-author box, the reference doesn't change : Charkaoui, préc., note 1, par. 2.
  • @mchenette No, what fbennett was asking is what the expected behavior is? Would you expect the short title to be shown or suppressed for subsequent citations when suppress-author is checked?
  • (FWIW, in AGLC 4 it explicitly shouldn't be surpressed: "If the footnote is a subsequent reference, then the case name should always appear in the footnote (this may be the short title).)
  • I think that @mchenette is wanting to suppress case names in order to chain together a series of cites to the same case.
  • First of all, I really appreciate the time you took today, @fbennett, @adamsmith and @bwiernik, to try to help me to resolve my problem. I am very worried because the bug in the version 5.0.66 affects hundreds of footnotes in my 260-page text (a book project).

Just to be clear, in my text, I don't put a title-short, and I don't want, a title-short in my case reference. I use the classic view in the window of the Zotero WORD plugin.

To answer the question of @bwiernik, I would like to manually suppress the name of the case reference in my footnote in my WORD document, by clicking the «suppress author» box in the window of the Zotero WORD plugin. I would also need to manually replace the case name of my Zotero reference by writing another case name in the prefix box in the window of the Zotero WORD plugin. Before the version 5.0.66, I can do this.

For instance, in my Zotero, I enter this case reference : R. v. Magill, 2013 YKTC 8. I enter "R. v. Magill" as a case name, "2013" as the case date, "YKTC" as the court and "8" as the first page. I didn't write a title-short in my reference.

I would like exactly this result in my footnotes, like it was in the version 5.0.65 :
    1. R. v. Magill, 2013 YKTC 8, par. 2
    2. R. v. Ramage, 2011 ONSC 3092, par. 3.
    3. R. v. Magill (Y. Terr. Ct.), préc., note 1, par. 13.

In the footnote 1, I didn't click the "suppress-author" box in the window of the Zotero WORD plugin. However, in the footnote 3, I click the "suppress-author" box and write in the prefix box, "R. v. Magill (Y. Terr. Ct.), préc.,".

@mchenette: I see roughly what you have done to get your citations right. Typing the body of the citation into the prefix field and suppressing everything else is not the best behavior for you: it would be better for the system to produce the correct forms for you automatically.

The current processor version indeed does not suppress bare titles (such as a case name), and that is by design. That said, you have a project in progress, and the update should not interfere with your work. To restore the previous behavior in Zotero, you can install the Propachi Legacy plugin. To install, download the plugin file and save it to your desktop. Then run Zotero and click on Tools -> Add-ons to open the add-ons dialog. In the upper right-hand corner, click on the gear menu, and select "Install Add-on from File ...". Selecting the file will add it to Zotero. When you restart Zotero, your citations should process as you expect.

I haven't tested this myself, so if there are still problems in the appearance of citations, post back to this thread and we can try rolling the processor version used by the Propachi Legacy plugin back a bit further.
  • @fbennett : It works!!!! Thank you for having fixed my problem. I will sleep better now.

I understand of your last post that the Propachi Legacy plugin is a kind of temporary solution. However, this solution is perfect for me because I figure to finish my text before summer.

Lastly, I have a question about your comment: "Typing the body of the citation into the prefix field and suppressing everything else is not the best behavior for you: it would be better for the system to produce the correct forms for you automatically."

What should I do for my future projects? Do I need to learn how to modify the code (commands) of the style of reference writing that I use in Zotero, the style «Guide des références pour la rédaction juridique 7e édition (Guide Lluelles, French - Canada)»?
  • We don't have a good grasp of the requirements of the Lluelles Guide, so we can work toward a better solution at a later time. I can help, and I would like to learn, but it will take some time, so for the time being just keep working in the way you have been. It's very good to hear that you are back on track.
  • @mchenette: The main Propachi plugin has been removed from service. The "Propachi legacy" plugin that we set up here is still available, but please note that it has a limited life expectancy. The details are explained on the Juris-M downloads page:

    https://juris-m.github.io/downloads/#csl-stuff
  • @adamsmith, did you have this issue in regards to AGLC4 and manage to rectify it by installing the Propachi Legacy plugin by any chance? I am encountering this same issue and installing the plugin has not worked for me (ping @fbennett). I am using Zotero 5.0.85.
  • Not clear what "this issue" is given the extensive thread. Could you say what you're trying to do specifically in your case?
  • Hi @adamsmith, the issue I am referring to is the ability to optionally suppress the case name per AGLC4’s rule to omit it when mentioned in the text. I understood from the above that this used to work in Zotero by selecting ‘suppress author’, but when an update was made this no longer worked to suppress either author or case name. The Prophecy plugin is supposed to fix this, but it doesn’t for me (for case name suppression). Thanks!
  • Got it -- see the later note about Propachi -- good chance it doesn't work in Zotero at all anymore. I don't think there currently is a solution for this

@fbennett is the intext feature of citeproc-js enabled in Zotero or Jurism?
