Problems modifying a citation style: page numbers missing from "book" type

I need to create a style with footnotes like "Schiefsky 2015: 645." I modified the American Sociological Association style from "inline" to "note" and now things look mostly fine. But books don't display page number ranges that are specified in the Zotero citation. I'm using the visual editor, and I can't figure out how to edit the page number display option for a "book" item. Even when I select "Locator: pages xxx-xxx" in the Example Citation for "book," they won't display in the editor, nor in my document.

I really am trying to learn how to edit styles myself, but mysteries like this keep me from doing it. Any help will be appreciated.
  • Hard to say without seeing the modified style. You're using <text variable="locator"/>? Note that <text variable="page"/> won't work.
  • That seems to have done it! Thanks for a quick answer to what I guess seems to you like a very stupid question.

Another question, if you happen to see this: the bibliography is meant to be in the form Schiefsky, M. (2015). How can I change from full first/middle names to initials?

Also, page numbers in the bibliography are supposed to be indicated not with a colon (as in the notes in the text) but with a comma, as Stadter, P. A. (1978). The Ars Tactica of Arrian: Tradition and Originality. Classical Philology, 73(2), 117–128. I can't seem to find where to change that delimiter.

    Thanks again.
  • set initialize-with to ". " on "name" in the editor
i.e. in the code <name initialize-with=". " name-as-sort-order="all"/> (and potentially some other attributes in there). If that doesn't work, "initialize" may be set to false. Turn it off or set it to true (which does the same thing).

And no, this is actually a pretty common question; the terminology is a bit confusing. Since it's necessary to distinguish these page numbers from those that are part of the item data like page ranges, and because locators can also be chapters etc., that confusion is probably unavoidable, though.
  • Great, thanks again! I didn't think to associate "initialize" with "initials," somehow. Much appreciated!
