Plugin inserting "Citation"

I need help. Zotero has really been acting up for me... over a month. It does not recognize my in text citations. Instead of inserting name and year it puts a ghost citation like "Citation." Very annoying.
Has anyone experienced this? How can I solve this once and for all?

{Citation} is the placeholder text that Zotero shows before you select an item to cite. Does the Insert Citation window pop up as normal and let you search for an item? How many citations are in your document?
