PDF's located within Zotero storage folder not uploading

I've recently upgraded my storage so I can upload all my pdfs but I've noticed that upon hitting sync only a fraction of them upload. 6 out of 20 in one folder, 20 out of 50 in another and so on. I've seen mention that linked files don't upload, but how do I know if the file is linked or not? For example, one paper I have right clicked and selected show file. The file is located within the storage folder in the Zotero folder, but this file has not uploaded. Could this file be a link, or does this mean it is a copy and simply isn't doing as it should and uploading?
  • By "not uploading", do you mean that you're not seeing the items at all online, or just that you're not able to view certain PDFs or snapshots online?

For the former, see Changes Not Syncing (and that wouldn't have anything to do with your storage quota). For the latter, see Files Not Syncing.
how do I know if the file is linked or not?
Linked files have a link in the icon. If the file is within the 'storage' folder, it's not a linked file. (You have to go out of your way to link files, so if you didn't do that, your files are being stored.)
  • By not uploading I mean a huge amount of them simply are not available in my library online. They do not show up at all.

Some files from each of my folders upload, but I don't think for any of the folders all of the files have uploaded.

The sync process has completed and has not given me an error message or icon. Each of the libraries is set to sync as some files from each of the folders is uploading, just not all of them for some reason.

Should I enable debut output logging, sync and submit the output to Zotero?
  • If you've gone through all the other steps, then yes, that's the final step.

But just to be clear, it's important to differentiate between "items" and "files" when describing what you're seeing. "Items" are the entries you see in Zotero. "Files" are the attached files — PDFs and snapshots — that you see in your PDF reader or browser when you double-click on items. It's still not entirely clear to me which you're referring to, since you mention "PDF's" even in the title of this thread.

Well for many of my items (articles) that have files (children/PDFs) I am seeing neither item or file online in my Zotero library.

I've run the sync after enabling debug and submitted the log. The debug ID is D663211083 (Hopefully this is where I'm supposed to post it)

It mentions in the first few lines about not having enough storage, but on the Zotero storage page it indicates I have used only 44%. There are a few other errors further in the log.
  • The debug output doesn't show any local changes to be synced. Since the issue here is changes not syncing up, we'll need a debug output that shows a local change being made followed by the next sync, and you should confirm that the change truly isn't reflected online.
  • I now have 398 of about 411 files uploaded, so something has changed, but they no longer retain the same structure. So the files items or files are all now just being stored in my library rather than in their local file structure and respective folders.
  • Where are you referring to? In your local Zotero or your online library? What exactly are you seeing and where?
  • My items and files from my local zotero have now uploaded. Locally they are stored in a collection within my library. This collection is made up of several subcollections. The items and files now appear online in Zotero in my library, but the majority of them not within the collection and subcollections they are stored in locally.

Its just a matter of order/file structure now.
  • That would still be a change not syncing, so you'd want to follow the same Debug ID process.
  • So could the change I make before syncing and getting a new debug ID be as simple as me deleting something?
  • It should be the change that's not being uploaded, or at least pertain to the same item. Collection membership is a property of an item, so if you're not seeing an item in a collection, you would want to make some change to that item and then sync (and confirm that the item still isn't appearing in the collection online).
  • I moved the item to the trash, synced, checked it was gone and it was. Then restored the item to library and it appeared in the correct subfolder online. Strange. I may have to move everything to the trash, sync, and then restore everything and sync again. Thank you.
  • Yeah, moving my entire library to the trash. Syncing. Then restoring my entire library and syncing has fixed the problem. Thank you.
