Problem syncing from PC to Zotero cloud library (error 1427742134)

Hi
I've been using Zotero for a few months, and have just tried to activate the sync function (references only, no attachments). My library on the PC has 4361 items, but the cloud has only 1097 and the desktop application won't continue - it gave me error reference 1427742134 saying too many retries.
Please can someone advise what I can do to get it to sync (as I want to be able to access the references from a tablet, too).
Many thanks

  • Could you provide a Debug ID (different from a Report ID) for a sync attempt that produces the error?
  • Thank you. Yes - my Debug ID is D942708669.
This cycle hasn't yet reported a failure, but has been running for a few hours without managing to upload any new records.
  • Hi. It has finally failed, and in doing so wiped most of the debug information (and will not let me submit it now). Here's the text from the debug screen:

  • It looks like you have an item in your library, imported from Mendeley, with almost 15,000 authors, many duplicates. Another one has 700.

Those shouldn't cause sync errors, and we'll try to fix that within the next few days, but in the meantime, could you paste "76CGFW7R" and "4W83GSRQ" into the Zotero search bar and look at those items? If you still have your Mendeley database, could you check if those were incorrect in Mendeley or whether this somehow happened during the import process?
  • Thank you.
That was one of the reasons I moved from Mendeley - it kept creating extra copies of authors that I had to manually delete, and mixing details of different papers together. Obviously I didn't find these ones at the time (I just looked - they did get corrupted within Mendeley before the transfer).
Looking into the one with 15,000 authors, it seems the authors are from one paper (but now with multiple copies), the abstract from a second, the title from a third and the DOI from a forth. So, on the basis the original cannot be found, I've deleted the record in my library.
The second reference was just multiple copies of the authors - so I deleted the record and re-saved it from PubMed.

So - these two records are 'fixed' in Zotero. The problem was in Mendeley (not the data transfer). Thank you for your help with this.

Is there a way to find records with either many authors, or more than one copy of the same author, from within Zotero so I can check the other records?
  • Thanks again for your help on this.
I've used DB Browser to view the sql files, and run a quick analysis, and I have over 70 records each with over 1000 authors! 12 records have over 10,000 authors. Even amongst the much smaller numbers I know some will be wrong.
Is there a way of re-creating records without having to import from scratch and delete the original, please?

    (Unencrypted databases: useful!)

There's no automated way of dealing with that, so the easiest option is just to paste the DOI, ISBN, PMID, or arXiv ID into Add Item by Identifier, select both items, right-click, and choose Merge Items. If there's no identifier, you'd do the same by just clicking on the URL label to open the publisher page and resaving from there. In some cases for both of those, you might need to then delete a duplicate PDF under the merged item.

We're working on the ability to update metadata for existing items, which will basically be an automated version of the above, but I'm not sure what we'll do in cases where there are more creators on the old item — I don't know that we'd want to automatically delete all the old creators. (That's part of what's tricky about automating this.) So while you could wait for that feature, doing this manually may be your best option.

(And thanks for confirming that this didn't happen on the Zotero side of things. It's really quite a bug.)
  • Thank you. I guess that's my evening's entertainment for a while!

I have to say that I am very glad to be out of Mendeley now - it had some good features, but the bugs became too much to deal with (and the creating multiple additional authors really hasn't helped).
