how to delete a reference with all the citations?

I have to reduce references from 38 to 30 for a prepared manuscript before submission as per the journal requirement. I want to remove 8 less important references from the manuscript. As each reference is cited in multiple places in the manuscript; finding each citation and removing it individually is a task as document refreshes with each deletion of the citation and the reference gets a new citation number.
I don't want to delete the reference from my zotero library.
Is there any easy way out for this problem?
Is there a tool or a way which will tell us where all and how many times a reference has been cited in the manuscript?

    I am not sure if there is any tool to help you out here, but you could change the citation style to an author-date one (e.g. APA) where it will be easier to identify which citations contain which items and remove them that way.

    Removing the items from your Zotero library will not remove them from your document.
