Question: formatting of French given names

The first Chanceller of the University of California, San Francisco was a professor named J. B de C. M. Saunders, whose middle names follow the conventions of his mother's native France. His full name can be found in a two forms: John Bertrand deCusance Morant Saunders; and John Bertrand de Cusance Morant Saunders.

In connection with the design of the new CSL processor for Zotero, I'm wondering whether the former version actually reflects usage in French discourse, or whether it is an artifact of limitations in database software that would otherwise have forced the "de" to uppercase.

Any guidance from readers of French would be greatly appreciated.
