"The highlighted citation no longer exists in your Zotero database"
"I’m unable to add a citation to the doc. because an error message pops up. Additionally, it appears that the citations in the document are not linked to the list of references anymore. Here is a screen shot of the error message that pops up on the document while it highlights one citation. Looks like the issue started after I copy pasted content from another doc. It specifically highlights 7-8 citations in the material I pasted. I tried to reinsert the same 7-8 citations but the problem returns.
"The highlighted citation no longer exists in your Zotero database", etc. This is the same problem Paul mentioned.
When I tried to insert citations manually after deleting the highlighted ones, zotero is still not inserting a citation or showing the previous error message.

If the document you copied the citations from was written with Zotero 4.0 or earlier and had the checkbox to store item metadata in the document unchecked, and you've lost your earlier database (or even imported and exported it), you won't be able to copy citations and have them work in a new document.
