Harvard Style: In-Text Citations

Hi, I can't find a reference to my question so apologies if what I ask has already been addressed.

I've been asked to format a PhD in Harvard style. For in-text citations, my supervisors prefer this format: (Laclau, 1977: 161) or (Laclau 1977: 161).

However, the only style I can find that will give me this in-text citation format is ASA (American Sociological Association), ad how it formats bibliographies is not ideal.

So, my questions:

1. Is anyone aware of a style, that allows me to have a Harvard bibliography such as I would get with Elsevier Harvard but also maintain the colon in-text citation format rather than this more typical Harvard format: (Laclau, 1977, p.161)

2. Or, is there a way of amending an existing style in Zotero to give me the in-text citation style I require.

Thank you for reading the post and help you can provide will be much appreciated.

I'm a novice Zotero user coming from an arts background rather than the humanities.
  • I would say that ASA is a fairly typical Harvard style (and if anything, Elsevier Harvard isn't super typical) so you'd have to say more about what's wrong with it for your purposes. There are relatively few styles that use the : delimiter for page numbers in text, I'm afraid. You can look at
    https://www.zotero.org/support/dev/citation_styles/style_editing_step-by-step

Generally it's going to be either to find a style that suits your need for bibliography and modify how in text is displayed.
  • Thank you for getting back to me. My difficulty with ASA is the inclusion of the author's full first name in the bibliography, rather than an initial, other than that the bibliographic reference is fine.

I'd like the ability to change the in-text citation to add a space after the colon to read '(Laclau 1977: 161)' rather than '(Laclau 1977:161)'

Thanks for the tip, I'll look at the style editing section. Looks a bit intimidating!
  • To edit the american-sociological-association style to (Laclau 1977: 161):

Go to line 170 where it says group delimiter=":" and change it to group delimiter=": ".

    For the authors' full names:
Go to line 33 (the author macro) and add initialize="false". Now it won't be initialised anymore.

Make sure to also change the self-link, style ID and file name to something different like american-sociological-association-phd. Otherwise it'll be overwritten.

  • That's fantastic, thank you so much. You're all very generous with your help.
  • Sorry, another question related to ASA style in Zotero.

It doesn't seem to produce '(ibid.)' for repeated sources for in-text citations. Can it be set up to do this or will I have to do it manually?
  • That's possible but are you sure you want to? Outside of Germany, that's highly unusual for Harvard-style citations.
  • Thank you, that's good to know. I'm responding to the preferences of my supervisors who have mixed backgrounds so perhaps I should discuss further with them. I'm assuming they'll not just want (ibid.) but also (ibid:401) etc.
  • Damnation,

I have made the change to the .csl file. Can I check this is correct please for the top of that file, or do I also need to replace both URLs and if so how:

    JC ASA PHD
    JC ASA PHD
    JC PHD ASA

  • sorry, I can see the system won't post the code extract I put in the last post. But would I need to replace the URL links for zotero and owl.english.purdue.edu?
  • Hi again, I have spoken with my supervisors and they do want me to use ibid for for repeated sources for in-text citations such as (ibid.), (ibid.: 45), (ibid.: 45-41) and presumably (Ibid.) at the end of a longer indented quote. Much appreciated if you could advise as to how I might go about doing this for ASA.
    Thank you.

It should look something like this:

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <style xmlns="http://purl.org/net/xbiblio/csl"; class="in-text" version="1.0" demote-non-dropping-particle="sort-only" page-range-format="chicago">

Same goes for the file name.

  • Hi, And thank you for previous advice. Unfortunately, I still need some help.

I now need my citations to look like this: (Denzin, 1986: 12). Note the comma after the author and the space after the colon. I don’t seem to be able to find any setting in Zotero that will allow me to do this, which is a requirement for delivery of my PhD. The closest I can find is ASA, as previously discussed, but this won’t give me a space after the colon though I have been kindly given a tip on this forum earlier for manipulating the code it works, but I don’t have a comma after the author, which I now need. I’m a bit intimidated by manipulating the code too!

Also, I need the bibliographic reference to look like this:

Denzin, N. K., Lincoln, Y. S., and Smith, L. T. (2008) Handbook of Critical and Indigenous Methodologies. Thousand Oaks: SAGE.

But with ASA I get a variation without the year in parenthesis, and with a full first name rather than an initial.

Any help would be very much appreciated as I’m running short on time. Run around hacks would be fine too. Basically, anything that works.

  • @JC88 Can you please start a new thread and provide all of the specific information requested at this link for a requesting new style?
    https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/wiki/Requesting-Styles
  • Thank you bwiernik. I'll do that now.
  • Thanks to all Bwiernik, damnation and adamsmith for your help with this so far. I've started a new style request thread as suggested.
