Inserting unicode accented characters

For the life of me, I can't figure out how to insert simple Roman accented characters, such as those used in French or Turkish. I've read through the material already posted on the forums (including http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/53/diacritical-marks/). My computer keyboard is set to US-International. And yet, I cannot seem to be able to input characters. This question is not about importing the data, but rather about typing it in myself.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Many thanks, and thanks especially for this GREAT product!
