word plug-in issues

just installed the zotero with the extensions/plug-in but not seeing the zotero in the ribbon on word. I have word 2010 edition.
I have tried all the steps given in the troubleshooting guide but no use.
I previously had Endnote and I tried uninstalling this but still no effect

Can someone suggest any other ideas about what might be happening?
  • Is this Word 2010 Starter Edition or the standard edition? (The former is ad-supported. It doesn't work with Zotero.)

If the standard edition, did you try the manual installation instructions? If so, and that didn't work, what exactly did you do and what happened?
  • Thank you so much for the response. I have a standard edition. I followed the manual instructions suggested in the link. Found out that the dotm files are already present in the STARTUP folder for word. hoever, I still went ahead and copied/pasted the file. unfortunately, it did not work.

It is very mysterious that I am unable to find the zotero in the word ribbon, no matter what I do. ( FYI, having similar issues with Mendeley as well).
  • What's your exact Word 2010 version?

Have you tried everything here, and if so, what happened at each step?
  • The Word version I have is 14.0.7214.5000 ( 32 bit), Microsoft Office Standard. Just one additional piece of information and what I believe is part of the problem is having Endnote 8 installed.
I had a similar issue with mendeley plugin as well, which I lost around the same time I installed the endnote.

I just found out that I am able to add zotero plugin without problems on a different computer at work where there is no endnote installed.

Do you know if I can have Zotero along with Endnote 8 ?
Otherwise I followed all the steps and everything seems to be alright except that it is just not showing up on the ribbon.
  • You will have to give us details on what happened/where you got stuck following the instructions dstillman linked to above, such as whether Zotero.dotm was available under the Word Add-ins dialog.
  • step 1 :check if zotero is installed
    - in the developer tab - clicked "add-ins" button. the zorero.dotm is checked

    step 2:
in the trust center settings- add-in button, the "require application add-ins to be signed by trusted publisher" and "disable all application add-in" buttons are unchecked. - no change

step 3 :closed the word document and re-opened it - still no zotero in the ribbon.

step 4 : trust care settings - macro settings- the " disable all macros with notifications" is checked.

step 5 : closed word and relaunched - did not get any notification asking for macro permissions.
Still no zotero button in the ribbon.

I feel there is some function that is blocking the zotero add-in on word.

I can see zotero add-in plugins in the destination folder ( but they are just not appearing in the word ribbon. ( path : users/appdata/roaming/microsoft/word/startup) - wish I could send a screenshot.

As I said before, is it possible the endnote is blocking them ? If so, how can I get past it ? - FYI, I even tried uninstalling endnote from my computer but it did not resolve the issue.

FWIW, I was able to install and see/use the zotero word plugin in a different computer which never had endnote installed.

    Thanks

  • I would add that in the step 1 above - in the developer tab - there is no "word-add-in" as mentioned in the troubleshooting link above. There is an "Add-in" button which brings templates and add-ins and the zotero.dotm box is checked. There is another COM add-in button which has only the endnote CWYW option which is checked.
