And you're not receiving a message about granting Zotero permission to control Word in the System Preferences? You should be receiving this message:

Zotero does not have permission to control Word. To grant this permission:

1) Open System Preferences
2) Click on “Security & Privacy”
3) Select the “Privacy” tab
4) Find and select “Automation” on the left
5) Check the checkbox for “Microsoft Word” under “Zotero”
6) Restart Word

Are you receiving that message, though? Did you try those steps? Do you see Microsoft Word under Zotero in the Automation preferences?
