Where is the menu to put in a WebDav address?

I'm trying to enter the address of a WebDav server I've set up, for sync'ing. Where is it? In the sync preferences, all it asks for is username and password, I don't see any place for a new URL for the server. How do I get to the menu shown on

https://www.zotero.org/support/preferences/sync#file_syncing

my menu doesn't look anything like that:

I'm running 5.0.58
  • You have to set up Zotero data sync, which always goes through the Zotero servers, before you can configure file syncing.
  • aha, there it is. Now I'm getting the error described here

    https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/cert_override

but when I try to generate the cert_override.txt, I can't get on with Firefox

    http://10.0.1.32/zotero

    it just says

You don't have permission to access /zotero on this server.

so how do I get it to generate a cert_override? It's a server in my own LAN, so I'm not worried about the certificate.
  • That's an HTTP URL, not an HTTPS URL, so there's no certificate.
  • hmm well when I hit "test server", I see this:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/uq77l0papdfujg6/Screen Shot 2018-12-01 at 9.46.40 PM.jpg?dl=0

so what do I do? Also, is there a window that shows the status/progress of the sync operation?
  • Right, that's HTTPS. But if you're testing with an HTTP URL in Firefox, it won't use a certificate that you can use to override. So you need to either use HTTP in Zotero or HTTPS in Firefox.
  • aha. Ok I went to the https in firefox, accepted the exception, and found the cert_override.txt file in the Application Support folder of firefox with a timestamp of now, so that makes me think it's the right file. But then I copied it to the Application support folder of Zotero, and tried "test server" again, and got the exact same error.
  • Did you restart Zotero? What's the exact location of the file? (You can x out your username.)
  • Ah I've restarted, and now the error is different:

    An unknown error occurred.

Please check your file sync settings or contact your WebDAV server administrator.

    HTTP 501

    what does this mean?
  • 501 is a server error ("Not Implemented").

That means you've resolved the certificate error, so any remaining problems are on your server. We can't help debug problems with individual WebDAV servers, so I'm afraid you'll need to take it from here, using your server logs as a guide.
