Another Chromebook question

I have a Chromebook with Ubuntu running in parallel using crouton. From previous posts I understand that I can just install Zotero Standalone under that Ubuntu and use Chrome extension button to save references _**when Chrome runs under same linux OS**. The question is, would it work if I run Zotero Standalone under linux but use Chrome Extension button under the original Chrome OS. In other words, would Chrome extension be able to talk to the Standalone across OS boundary (it's chroot boundary, technically) .
How do the extension and the standalone interact: do they use local IP ports, pipes, IPC calls or something else? I guess I can just try and see if it works.

If it runs Ubuntu then you can install the unofficial debs which package the official binaries, available at https://github.com/retorquere/zotero-deb/releases/tag/apt-get

edit: if crouton has apt-get support then you may want to use the description at https://github.com/retorquere/zotero-deb
