Zotero Word Plugin: Buttons unresponsive

Hello,

I have installed the Zotero Standalone application and am trying to use the Word plugin.

I can see the Zotero tab in my Word toolbar, but clicking on any of the buttons does not do anything.

I have followed the instructions under https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_manual_installation but nothing has changed.

I can see Zotero.dot and Zotero.dotm listed unter Active Microsoft Office-Add-Ins.

Can anyone tell me how to get this working?

(I'm using Word 2010 Standard, under Windows 7 Professional, neither of which I can update because this is my company work environment.)

Thanks a lot!
  • Word plugin buttons not responsive section of the troubleshooting guide applies. If you're not getting any error prompts from it is likely that security restrictions on these machines are preventing the communication between Word and Zotero. Does the Word plugin work on other company machines? Why did you need to follow manual installation instructions? Did the word plugin not appear in Word when using the install button in Zotero Preferences -> Cite -> Word Processors?
  • The plugin did appear but was unresponsive. I had hoped to fix that with the manual install.

I just started Zotero to "Ensure that Zotero Word for Windows Integration is enabled" (it was and is) and now, while Zotero is running, the plugin works. (I am pretty sure, though, that I have tried using the plugin while standalone is running before, and it didn't work, so I'm not sure what is different now...)

    Anyway, seems fixed for now.

Does this mean standalone Zotero generally has to be running for the Word plugin to work? (Because I've previously used Zotero in Word (a few years ago) and I don't remember having to run the standalone version...)
  • You used to be able to only have Firefox with the Zotero plugin running to use the Word plugin, but Firefox has removed the capability to run extensions that powerful in the browser, so now you have to have the Zotero client open instead.
  • Ah, that explains it. Thank you!
