Bibliography -- Not everything showing up

I am experimenting with creating a bibliography for the first time in Zotero.
It looks like the one that is generated only includes material I've manually entered. The material not included is all the items that I have imported (e.g. articles from JSTOR and Ebsco and ebooks from library website).

Can someone give me guidance and solve this problem? Thanks
  • How are you generating the bibliography specifically?
  • I'm right clicking on a collection (I named Secondary), and then choosing "Create Bibliography from Collection"
  • And do you have subcollections in that collection? These wouldn't be included in the bibliography. If not, how are you importing the items from JSTOR etc.? Using the Save to Zotero button or some other way (how?)?
  • To answer your second question -- I import by clicking"Cite this Item," then selecting "Export a RIS file (For EndNote, ProCite, Reference Manager, Zotero, Mendeley…)"

The first question about bibliography, you pose, is a bit more difficult for me to answer.

I believe it is a "Collection." And, I thought I hadn't created subcollections in it. I am having trouble understanding how to use the program and what is categorized as what.

The first problem: Is there a way to tell what is a collection and what is a subcollection once the items are created?

I have discovered a new puzzle: The first time I tried to create the Bibliography, I was at home using my computer with Standalone Zotero program. At work, I only have access to the online version.
MY QUESTION: How does one create bibliographies in each of these versions?
  • 1. OK, so for collections, the easiest would be to look at https://www.zotero.org/support/collections_and_tags and see if that makes sense and allows you to clarify which items are in which collection (or its subcollections)

    2. The recommended way of adding citations from EBSCO, JSTOR, etc. is via the Save to Zotero icon on your web browser: https://www.zotero.org/support/getting_stuff_into_your_library#via_your_web_browser That will produce more accurate import, add PDFs where possible, and lets you select where items go

    3. The website only provides very basic functionality for Zotero. You can, for example, not create a bibliography for a collection with more than 25 items. (To do that, select all and the click the 2nd button from the right at the top (it says "Cite" when you hover over it).

Depending on what you're after, using the simpler https://zbib.org/ tool may end up working better for you.
