Best Practice--Edit Item Info or Citation?

When the Item Info for a source contains an error (e.g. proper noun not capitalized) or contains information unneeded in a cite (e.g. a book published this year is listed as "First Edition"), what is considered best practice--making edits to the Item Info itself or making the change in the citation after it has been inserted into a document?
