Lost all data

Version 1.0.0b4.r4.r1365 on Mac Intel Duo

Great program installed last night with Firefox 2.0.0.2. I am anticipating this to be a huge boost to my research activities. Upon opening the program today I find that all of my work from last night has vanished and Firefox has been reset to default - ie. all bookmarks lost as well. I have my bookmarks backed up in HTML files - so no problem to recover these. What is the method for backing up and recovering Zotero data?

Zotero has no effect on other data stored in the Firefox profile, so if your bookmarks and other Firefox data disappeared, it's highly unlikely that this had anything to do with Zotero. Did you somehow create a new profile or install anything else that would've affected the Firefox profile directory?

To answer your question, Zotero stores its data in the 'zotero' subdirectory of the Firefox profile directory unless you specify a different location in the preferences.
  • Hi Dan,

The only thing that I can think of is that the update of Firefox happened at the same time I was installing Zotero. Is there a way of backing up the zotero subdirectory? Where does it live on a Mac and how can I connect a directory backup with a different machine?

Check out How To Manage Profiles from the Mozilla site for more info.

After shutting down Firefox, you can copy the entire Zotero data directory to a flash drive or zip it into an archive and copy it the Firefox profile directory on another machine.
