zotero doesn't recognize it's own citation

Report ID: 283367695

When I try to edit an old citation, Zotero doesn't recognize the citation. This is for every citation except the first one. Normally when it recognizes it, it becomes highlighted in a light gray color but it isn't doing that. When I put my cursor over the reference number (or highlight it) and try to edit the citation, it says you have to put your cursor over a Zotero citation.

I also tried inserting a new citation which works, but when I try to edit it, Zotero doesn't recognize it.

Am using Zotero version 4.0.29.15 and Microsoft Word on a Mac.

Appreciate any advice!

Start by upgrading to Zotero 5. Your version is very out of date. Also, what specific version number of Word are you using (e.g., 16.15)?
  • That did help a bit - now it recognizes some of them, but still not all of them. I wonder if it's something with the particular document; when I open a different document those citations work fine.

    The Word version is 16.15.
  • Word version 16.9 broke Zotero integration. We updated the plugin to work with Word 16.9 on Zotero 5.0, but if you were using 4.0, you did not get that update. You will need to reinsert any citations that Zotero does not recognise (when removing citations, make sure you remove one additional character on each side of citation text, to ensure the underlying field codes are removed too).
