local installation of 4.0. How to upgrade to 5.0?

Hello there Zotero,

I used to be a very heavy user of my local instance of Zotero 4.0. I bumped into it today and saw a message saying synching would no longer occur for 4.0 as of August 1, 2018.

I'm assuming that 5.0 is what we're looking at on the website, correct?

I have 20K citations in my 4.0 instance. How do I make sure I don't lose any of them when I upgrade to 5.0?

And how do I upgrade to 5.0?

Thanks,
Susan

You can simply upgrade from Help → "Check for Updates…", though if you're on Windows, for the Zotero 5 upgrade it can be a little cleaner to reinstall from zotero.org. (No real difference, but the installer will rename some directories to reflect that the Zotero application is no longer called "Zotero Standalone".)

You should obviously make sure you have a backup of your Zotero data directory (e.g., as part of your usual system backup), though there's no reason you'd lose data.
