Can't get Zotero to launch from symlink (Ubuntu Studio 18.04)

I've installed Zotero and it works fine if I launch it by double clicking the desktop configuration file. Following the instructions, I have created a symlink to zotero.desktop in ~/.local/share/applications/ and the Zotero icon does indeed show up in my application launcher. However, the application won't actually launch from there.

Any ideas? (If it makes any difference, ubuntu studio uses xfce.)
