Help. Can't choose custom data dir on zotero 5

My data directory is on a usb drive.
Today I installed zotero5,
I was not allowed to browse to the thumb drive to set the data directory. When I try to browse I’m shown only a subset of the folders that are there, and that subset seems to be independent of permissions. I set it to show hidden files, same problem. The path I'm looking for starts with /media and that directory is not shown.

When I installed, there was a blurb that said that if my zotero folder was not in the default location that I might have to run the following:
flatpak override --user --filesystem="/PATH/TO/ZOTERO/FOLDER org.zotero.Zotero"
Ran that at the prompt but zotero still won’t let me browse to the thumb drive.

I was previously using this thumb drive on a different linux box, and there zotero had no problem allowing me to browse to the thumb drive and set the data directory.

Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks.

Details:
I’m installing zotero 5 on Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon using mint’s software manager.

I was trying to set the data directory in the Zotero UI>edit>preferences>advanced>files and folders>data directory location>custom
