Style request: Politix
Hello,
I am writing a book manuscript for an academic publisher which citation style is the same as Politix, a French review of political science. I have searched a similar style in the Zotero style repository, in the Zotero forum and on http://editor.citationstyles.org (search by examples). I was not able to find a style meeting the Politix style main peculiarity, which is to put the initial of authors' first name between parentheses. After having spent several hours trying to modify an existing style in order to meet Politix standards (using as a reference the French EHESS style Tapuscrit), I am desisting... So, if it is technically possible and not too complicated to create new style, I would be extremely grateful (and I wouldn't be the only one)!
Here is the necessary information:
- Online style documentation: http://politix.cairn.info/recommandations-aux-auteurs/
- ISSN: 0295-2319
- EISSN: 1953-8286
"Note" style of reference, without bibliography
- Example of citations (alwaus in-text citation):
(1)
(1) Campbell, (J. L.), Pedersen, (O. K.) « The varieties of capitalism and hybrid success », Comparative Political Studies, 40 (3), 2007 ; Mares, (I.) Firms and the welfare state: When, why, and how does social policy matter to employers? In P. A. Hall & D. Soskice (Eds.), Varieties of capitalism. The institutional foundations of comparative advantage, New York, Oxford University Press, 2001.
Titles of journals, books etc. are in italic
- link to a freely available paper: https://www.persee.fr/doc/polix_0295-2319_2004_num_17_68_1992
Thank you!

Does this journal publish only in French?
Also, this is not a numeric style, but a note style. Those (1) etc. will be generated by your wordprocessor. ;)
I've made a draft of the style. Can you toroughly check this style and let me know if anything needs adapting? Right click, save as, install in Zotero: https://github.com/POBrien333/styles/raw/aab778f60bb3855887fc6c28f2e3332de1b04ab0/politix.csl
I have installed the style and checked the citation of several types of documents. I can see a serie of details that don't match with Politix's standards. Hereafter, I copy the "rule" of each detail to be fixed, an example of how it appears with the current style and of how it should be.
I hope it is possible to fix these issues without spending too much time on it...
In any case, thank you again.
Doris
- BOOK: the total number of pages shouldn’t be indicated.
e.g.: Thorp (R.), Bertram (G.), Peru, 1890-1977. Growth and Policy in an Open Economy, London, Royaume-Uni, MacMillan, 1978, 475 p
It should be: Thorp (R.), Bertram (G.), Peru, 1890-1977. Growth and Policy in an Open Economy, London, Royaume-Uni, MacMillan, 1978.
- COLLECTIVE BOOK: author names should appear with the same format as in other type of references, and followed by “, dir.,” instead of “(éds.)”. The total number of pages should not appear either.
(when English books, they should be followed by “, eds.” or “, ed.” depending on the number of editors, but I shall correct that manually as I assume that it is not possible to include this alternative with CSL).
e.g. FITZGERALD Valpy et THORP Rosemary (éds.), Economic Doctrines in Latin America. Origins, Embedding and Evolution, Oxford, Palgrave MacMillan, 2005, 275 p.
It should be: Fitzgerald (V.), Thorp (R.), eds., Economic Doctrines in Latin America. Origins, Embedding and Evolution, Oxford, Palgrave MacMillan, 2005.
e.g. SAINSAULIEU Ivan et SURDEZ Muriel (éds.), Sens politiques du travail, Paris, Armand Colin, 2012, 320 p.
It should be: Sainsaulieu (I.), Surdez (M.), dir., Sens politiques du travail, Paris, Armand Colin, 2012.
- JOURNAL ARTICLE: the volume and the issue numbers should appear in a normal font (instead of bold for the volume number). When cited a second time or more, abbreviated title should be followed by “art. cit.”

- CHAPTER IN COLLECTIVE BOOK: the editor’s name should be followed by “, dir.” (or ideally, ", ed." or ", eds." if it's an English book but I shall correct that manually). When cited a second time or more, abbreviated title should be followed by “art. cit.”
e.g. Hunt (S.), « Direct foreign investment in Peru. New rules for an old game », in Lowenthal (A. F.), The Peruvian Experiment: Continuity and Change Under Military Rule, Princeton, Princeton University Press, 1975 p. 335‑337.
2nd cite: Hunt (S.), « Direct foreign investment in Peru », op. cit.

2nd cite: Hunt (S.), « Direct foreign investment in Peru », art. cit.
- PHD DISSERTATION: title should appear in italic, total number of pages should not appear.
e.g. Helfgott (F.), Transformations in Labor, Land and Community. Mining and Society in Pasco, Peru, 20th Century to the Present [normal font], Thèse de doctorat en anthropologie et histoire, University of Michigan, 2013, 582 p.

- WHEN FOUR OR MORE AUTHORS or editors, only the first author or editor name should appear, followed by “et. al.” in italic.
e.g. Combes (H.), Choukri (H.), Mathieu (L.), Siméant (J.), Sommier (I.), « Observer les mobilisations. Retour sur les ficelles du métier de sociologue des mouvements sociaux », Politix, 93 (1), 2011.
It should be: Combes (H.) et. al. [italic], « Observer les mobilisations. Retour sur les ficelles du métier de sociologue des mouvements sociaux », Politix, 93 (1), 2011.
- eds vs dir: fixed (it can't be differentiated in CSL)
- editor macro: generally fixed
- journal article: volume bold. I've based this on a current paper. Could you double check that in some papers?
- thesis: should be fine
- Where can I find those et al rules?
new style: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/POBrien333/styles/88dc3c13b40b55a23f8eaa8ebbea3ede3739642d/politix.csl
I'm sorry but there are still things that don't match...
- collective books: it should be "dir." without parenthesis
- chapters in collective books: "dir." should also appear after editor(s)' name(s)
- thesis: the title should appear in italic
- multiple cites of journal articles and chapters in collective books: it should be ended by "art. cit." (normal font), instead of "op. cit."
- journal article: I have checked on several artiles, published more than 10 years ago and in the latest issue, and volume numbers always appear in normal font.
- "et al" rules and other ones are stated in a pdf document that I was sent by the editor, in French... I should have sent you a link but I was not sure how to do. I hope that works: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AZXB--Jgzm_o8EcoUnsHM5rmKqcoXC4F/view?usp=sharing
-, dir.: fixed
- chapters, editor label: weird that was missing. fixed.
- thesis title in italics: fixed
- art. cit./op. cit.: @adamsmith. This style has subsequent and ibid set. Do I get rid of the subsequent part here?
- volume in bold: thanks for checking. fixed. they should really include this on their website. Et al is now set and in italics.
