Chicago 17th ed (author-date) question about doi and U2

I am a kind of confused. Can anybody please guide me to next troubleshooting step?

When a ris record like this is imported.

As seen above, "U2" record in ris record goes "doi".
When the ris record has DO and not U2, things go OK.

I have checked cslfile for chicago, but not much progress. Currently I am checking zotero.sqlite file to see data structure of zotero.

Any feedback will be appreciated.

cheers
  • This has nothing to do with Chicago style, but rather with importing that RIS file into Zotero. U2 is not normal place to store journal abbreviations in RIS—where are you getting that RIS?

Note that importing RIS files is rarely the best way to add items to your library. Instead, you should generally use the Save to Zotero button in your browser. See https://zotero.org/support/getting_stuff_into_your_library
  • Going back even further, I can't replicate this on import. Zotero should completely ignore the U2 field in RIS and does for me.
Moreover, before writing something to the DOI field from the RIS translator, Zotero checks that it's actually a DOI.

Which Zotero version exactly are you using?
  • Hya

    Thanks for replies.

The zotero version is 4.0.29.16 (Debian, buster amd64) libreoffice 6.0.4.2, firefox 52.8.0

For me, at least two more records go wrong.

I checked with a new document for test purpose. alas nothing goes wrong.

The document, with which things go wrong, is 6 pages long with 144 citations. I need to find the way to straighten up. I'd like to avoid starting over.
So far, none of following works. refresh, changes styles back and forth, add/remove dummy citation, reference mark/format mark.

    cheers
  • First, your version of Zotero is several years out of date. Start by upgrading to Zotero 5.

Second, as I mention above, this has nothing to do with your document or any citations. To correct the citations in your document, you need to clean up the data in your Zotero library. Find the item in your library and remove the “Comm Child” from the DOI field and make any other corrections. Until you fix the data in your library, nothing is going to change in any style or setting in LibreOffice.

In general, it is ALWAYS a good idea to review the data for each item after you import it to ensure that everything is entered correctly.
  • Hya,

    Thanks for your comment.

Yes, it is still zotero4. (still in Debian repo.) They know that zotero5 is around and upgrade has the highest priority.

When I check zotero record, (right pane in its window), doi field is empty. There is not much I can do within zotero GUI. I have not checked zotero.sqlite yet.

For the time being, I take care of each citation/reference. I will wait for Debian upgrade.

    I will update.

    cheers
  • I'm not quite sure what your workflow is, but I can say with some certainty that the only way Zotero would produce the above citation would be with "Comm Child Health;Gastroenterology;General Paediatrics." in the DOI -- possibly that citation is still stored in the document so doesn't update. I assume it won't create this in a new document?

But beyond that, we really can't provide a ton of support for such an old Zotero version.
  • I would recommend not waiting for the Debian repo to update but rather to build Zotero 5 yourself—see https://www.zotero.org/support/dev/client_coding/building_the_standalone_client and https://packages.debian.org/source/sid/zotero-standalone-build

With the Debian dependencies already installed, you might also be able to use Zotero’s Linux build (haven’t explored that though):
    https://zotero.org/download

Like adamsmith says, the only way that the item could be rendered like that if the DOI field is empty in Zotero is if the citation in LibreOffice is disconnected from your Zotero library. If that’s the case, delete the citation and re-insert.
  • Hya,

I updated zotero. So far, looks good.
