Save to Zotero icon not showing up on portable Firefox toolbar (USB drive)

We installed portable Firefox on 2 USB external drives (Mac OSX), then downloaded and installed Zotero 5.0.52 on the drives. We need to run Zotero from the external drives due to the large number of pdf's that will be added. No icon on the portable Firefox toolbar at this point. Tried downloading Zotero connector and got the message "There is no application set to open the document "Zotero_Connector-5.0.40.xbi"". What are we doing wrong?
Thanmks, Scott
  • You don't need to run Zotero from Firefox portable to store files on an external hard disk. Simply install Zotero locally and then set the custom data directory location to the external harddisk.

But if you must: For the Zotero connector, are you downloading the connector in those portable Firefox instances? They should install it automatically. Otherwise, try installing it from file in the add-ons menu in Firefox.
  • Adam: Thank you for your prompt reply!
...to clarify, (1) install Zotero 5.0 as normal on our laptops, (2) copy the normal data directory from the laptop drive to the USB hard drive, (3) in Zotero/Preferences/Advanced/Files and Folders, under "Data Directory Location," check custom and point to the data directory now on the external USB drive.
Hopefully, as these users are again invited to join an existing Group library, all the existing citations and pdf's will download onto the external drives.
    Two more questions:
    - Will the normal 5.0 install require "normal" Firefox on the laptop hard drives, and install the "download files" icon and additional software into Firefox?
    - After doing this, should the original version of the data directory be deleted on the laptop drives, or left in place?

Any browser with a connector, so Firefox, Chrome, or Safari

I'd recommend that, not least so you notice when Zotero can't find the version on the harddisk and tries to fall back to the local one.
