cannot start Zotero form external disc anymore

I have been using Zotero on an external disc for years (both the program and my library). Today my Windows system made some repair to the external disc and now I get the following message when I try and start Zotero:

TypeError: newFile.createUnique is not a function

I tried uninstalling and re-installing. Zotero started, but when I changed the library directory from the default to my custom location and restarted Zotero as requested the problem reappeared: I get the message above again.

Is my library broken? Is there anything I can do to try and fix this? I would be grateful for any help!

It looks like you have a corrupted database, and the error message isn't being displayed correctly. (We'll fix that.)

For your database you can try the DB Repair Tool.

As my database is larger than 100 Mb I could not use the on-line tool you suggested, but I followed the instructions for manual repair by Alan Freeman (https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/2607/) and it worked. My database is back and running! I will make frequent backups from now on.
