Chrome Connector "data spillage"

From our IT shop: "You're request to have ... Zotero Connecter ... whitelisted for use with Chrome is not able to be completed. These extensions were reviewed previously and due to the ability to link to multiple devices which could lead to data spillage." [They weren't hired for their writing skills.] We are in a federal agency with hypersensitive security people but really no information worth stealing. Any thoughts as to how Chrome Connector can be altered to dodge this issue? Would that change remove some other important functionality?
  • I honestly don't know what they're referring to, so it's probably worth asking for a clarification.

If Zotero is open, the Zotero Connector only talks to Zotero on your computer (with one optional exception, discussed below).

If Zotero is closed, the Zotero Connector will periodically download translator metadata from zotero.org, and then it will download translator code from zotero.org and cache it for sites that you visit. If you try to save with Zotero closed, it will prompt you to log in to your Zotero account and save to the server, but you have to opt in to that. That could be what they're referring to, though.

If a save fails, the Zotero Connector will by default report information on the error, including the URL, to zotero.org. Those reports don't contain any other identifying info (username, IP address), are generally only viewed in aggregate, and are deleted after a week. You can disable broken-translator reporting from the connector prefs.
