Insert Bibliography based on citations in footnotes

I am trying to insert a bibliography of all the books/articles/book sections I have cited in my word-doc, without first having to select all the citations I have used seperately in Zotero (I have hundreds). The Insert Bibliography link in the plugin for Word does not work. This was an option in Endnote, but I am relatively new to Zotero so do not know how to proceed.
Thanks!

    Zotero definitely can create a bibliography based on the citations inserted using the Word add-in. It sounds like your citations might not be connected to Zotero. How were you inserting the citations into Word (using the Add/Edit Citation button or no)? If you place the cursor in one of the citations and click the Add/Edit Citation button, does the Edit Citation window pop up with the Citation already there to Edit, or is the window empty?

    Thanks for this, it is connected, I used the shortcut and can edit the citations by placing the cursor in one of the citations. So that is not the problem. Hope you can help!
  • What exactly happens when you click the Add/Edit Bibliography button?
  • It takes a really really long time and then it says: operation could not be completed, communication error, and in the doc it says: {Citation}
  • Do you get this problem in a new document?
  • What do you mean? I have to safe it under another name and try again in the new doc? If it helps, I just tried again and wrote down the error code: error-1712
  • No, I mean start with a new empty document. Insert some citations, then add the bibliography. Does that work?
  • Yes, that works. So it is a problem in the document itself. I see now that there is a difference in the new doc and in my manuscript: most citations in my manuscript are underlined, although not all of them. might be a result of copy-pasting from earlier versions of the manuscript. Is there any way to solve this?
  • Can you submit an Error Report ID (from the Zotero help menu) after getting the error in the document and post it here?

    The underlining is because you have automatic refreshing disabled in your document (you were probably offered an option to disable it at some point because you have many citations which can otherwise slow Zotero down a lot). You can remove them by clicking the Refresh button in the Zotero tab to update the formatting of all of the items. You can re-enable automatic refresh by checking that option in the Zotero Document preferences.

    It’s possible that you have a corrupt citation in your document. Try to run through these steps (particularly Step 8) to see if you can find one:
    https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting#debugging_broken_documents

    Let us know if it’s working after that. Otherwise, we can look into something else.
  • I will try this, thanks, I'll let you know if it works
