PII (Publisher Object Identifier) support for metadata retrieval?
I have a lot of relatively old full-text PDFs lacking DOI or embedded metadata, but have PII (Publisher Object Identifier) in the 1st pages.
Example of PII strings:
0146-6380(94)00113-8
Searching Google Scholar with PII returns the exact article in 1st place, so extracting PII from such PDFs might supplement Zotero's metadata retrieval function.

But even Google Scholar seemingly wouldn't be reliable. For your example, it returns two results, and if you follow the first, as far as I can tell there's no indication of the PII anywhere on the ScienceDirect page outside the PDF itself. (The PII used in the URL is different, and the DOI is based on that other id.)
