footnotes keep crashing word 2016

I am in deep thesis and using a new uni computer and zotero is crashing word regularly, and it seems to happen when adding or editing citations. I have contacted the Uni IT and because it is not a supported program at my university they can't help me, hence sent me to the forums, any suggestions welcome,

note: it is hard for me to uninstall anything like Word as the IT guys have to do that, but I can uninstall zotero but I am afraid to do so
