What kind of development environment do you need to run zotero source code?

I want to use Zotero's source code to perform secondary development on Zotero, but I can't find the development environment it depends on, which makes me very annoyed. It was originally intended to use XULRunner to build the zotero source code, but the result was not what I wanted.
